New Survey Shows PCs on the Decline and Smartphones on the Rise

smartphone data

According to a  report released by the Pew Research Center, 45% of US adults have some sort of tablet device. According to additional data in the report, 10% fewer young adults (78%) own traditional laptop or desktop computers than than in 2010 (88%). But 86% of 18 to 29-year-olds own a smartphone.

These reports show that while we still live in a cross device world, smartphones are gaining in their role in and are dominant computing device for a majority of US consumers.

What does that mean for your marketing? It means that you need to ensure that your digital marketing, especially your website is accessible from am mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone.

Also, if you have an e-commerce element and sell any type of products or services through your website, you need to make that element is accessible on a mobile device. This is especially important during the holiday season. Right now, smartphone visits represent about 30% of all e-commerce/retail site traffic. Adobe is predicting that mobile traffic this Thanksgiving will exceed PC traffic. While most e-commerce transactions still take place over a desktop or laptop, the data is telling us that it is possible that could switch to mobile in the next few years.

As the data begins to shift toward a mobile universe, website owners and businesses with a digital presence need to be making the appropriate changes toward mobile to keep up.
