Last week, eMarketer predicted that Instagram’s ad growth could outpace Twitter and Google in the next few years, pointing to the growth of what used to be the new kid on the block in the social media world. Instagram is also growing in users, as it’s almost above the 300 million user mark, which would make it the second most popular form of social media, above Twitter.

Instagram is an excellent platform for small businesses to promote their products and services. It’s a visual platform with highly engaged users and gives you the change to connect, engage and show off a real look at your business.

Here are some tips for getting started on Instagram:

  1. Make sure you add a link to your website and connect your Instagram account to your other social media accounts. This will help increase your followers because you can connect with those who follow you on Twitter or Facebook already, thus increasing your reach and connecting with your existing audience. You can also embed your Instagram onto your website to add another visual dimension and grow your followers

2. Use hashtags to discover what people are talking about in your area or industry. People sort and search on Instagram through hashtags and so use relevant hashtags can help you reach more new followers and you can find more people to follow through relevant hashtags. For example, if you’re a local business, always hashtag the town or city you are in and always hashtag your business name. This will help you see if anyone is posting about or at your business.

3. Test videos! Instagram allows users to upload short videos to give an even deeper look at your business.

4. Comment, engage and connect! Engagement on Instagram is 15 times higher than it is on Facebook so it is perfect for engaging! Answer comments, comment on other users and like other photos. It’s a great place to answer questions, address users and get to know your customers!

5. Post other’s images. If you find an image you love that is relevant to you and your business, post it on your feed. It’s a great way to showcase your fans using your product or service or at your location. Just be sure to give credit and tag the original poster.

6. Be consistent. Check in on Instagram once a day or multiple times a day. This will help you stay in front of your audience and keep you connected.
