Future of Tech: What Virtual Reality Will Be in 2016

future of vr

Virtual reality might still seem like science fiction but the truth is, it’s poised to take off in 2016. Many experts are predicting that 2016 is the year of virtual reality (VR). Here’s what to expect from the new technology in the coming year.

The stage is being set for mass adoption of virtual reality. The entertainment and gaming industries are the first to jump on board with VR. By the beginning of the year, VR headsets and VR-capable hardware and software will be readily available from some of the bigger players in the tech industry, including Facebook-owned Oculus, HTC, Samsung and Sony. Many of these devices are headsets that will immerse users into three-dimensional worlds, letting them look around and feel as if they’re there. Movie studios are already partnering with VR companies to bring VR content to their markets. Similarly news organizations are working with VR companies to bring immersive experience of the news to live events.

Mass adoption of VR will depend largely on the price point, how quickly devices can be manufactured and the availability of VR-software and VR-capable content. VR gaming systems will be higher priced than usual and that will affect how many users purchase in the beginning. However many developers are already working towards developing VR software or have done so already so many devices will already be VR ready. Experts are predicting that even more apps and 3D content will become more widespread as we move into 2016.

While gaming and entertainment are leading the way in VR, there is much more in store for the future and VR will begin to be a part of different industries in the next year. The education industry is said to be the next industry after the entertainment to introduce VR content. Theme parks around the world are already adding VR headsets to roller coasters and other rides. Other industries that are already moving towards VR content include travel, real estate, retail and manufacturing.

This is an exciting technology trend and while it’s uncertain how VR will continue to grow this year, one thing is certain: that this is just the beginning for the technology and it’s one that we should all be watching!
